Sprains

Sprains occur when a muscle is overstretched and they usually effect the wrist, knee or ankle.

When someone sprains a joint you should use the RICE procedure highlighted below:

  • R – Rest the injured part of the body by helping the individual into a comfortable position. By doing so it prevents any further damage
  • I – Ice, Use an ice compress by wrapping some ice in a triangular bandage or other clean material and hold gently on the injury. Do not apply ice directly to the injury as this may damage the skin. Cool the injury for 10-15 minutes
  • C - Compress the injury by applying a bandage around the ice compress. This will help reduce pain and will provide further support for the injury
  • E - Elevate the injured part. This will continue to reduce swelling and pain.
