Shock
Shock in relation to first aid means that an individual's body fluid has stopped circulating properly. The individual normally appears weak, confused, dizzy and may deteriorate into unconsciousness.
In order to treat shock there are a number of procedures that you can follow:
- Try to lay the individual on the floor and keep their legs higher than the head and supported on a chair
- If this is not possible then keep them warm but not overheated
- If you are outside try to wrap blankets or coats around the individual paying careful attention to their head where most body heat can be lost
- Ensure that you keep a watchful eye on the individual's airway by keeping surrounding people away from them and loosen tight clothing
- Be prepared to put into recovery position if necessary or even to resuscitate if breathing stops
- Reassure the individual with realistic and comforting comments. For example, that medical help is on its way
