epilepsy

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is an extremely common condition where an electrical discharge moves across the brain. Common triggers of epileptic fits are flashing lights or stress.

When an individual has an epileptic fit there are various procedures that you should follow:

  • If an individual suffers from a minor fit, which normally means that the look as if they are daydreaming or have suddenly switched off, then you must guide the person away from danger and reassure them when they return to normal
  • If an individual suffers from a major fit then do not try to restrain the person because the contractions are so strong that it may lead to you or the individual breaking bones
  • Do not attempt to put anything in their mouth
  • Move any potential dangers away from the individual
  • If possible place a pillow or a folded piece of clothing under the head to cushion it
  • Once the seizure has finished check the individual's airway and breathing
  • Be prepared to resuscitate or place in recovery position if necessary
  • When the individual comes around reassure them and highlight that they may have lost control of their bladder so cover them up
  • When they are feeling okay and are steady on their feet then take them somewhere to clean up
  • The individual will probably be very tired so try and find somewhere to lie down and sleep
  • Also ask the person what they want to do because they normally have their own strategies in dealing with the condition
